Not Dinner and a Movie

September 1, 2010

It’s not too often that we agree on a movie, so I’m constantly on the lookout for different dates to go on with my man. Here’s a short list of some fun things to do that don’t include shelling out 10 dollars for a supersized popcorn:

Baseball Game: Head to a minor league baseball game for a fraction of the major league cost and just as much fun. They usually have great weekly events like special low admissions or “Thirsty Thursdays” with cheap beer.

College Sports: Tailgating. Need I say more?

Comedy Show: Head to a local bar or comedy club for a few laughs. Even if the comedian isn’t Seinfeld quality, you’re bound to have a good time.

County Fairs: There’s nothing more classic than smooching your date atop a Ferris wheel. County fairs provide hours of entertainment fun. If you’re up to it you could even try entering a baking or painting contest together.

Drive-In Movie: They’re rare these days, but if you’re willing to drive a good 45 minutes you might be in luck. Make-out in the backseat while watching the latest slasher flick and you’ll feel transported back to the seventies. Bonus: A lot of theaters offer carload nights if you want to bring your friends for cheap.

Fishing: No joke. Even if you refuse to touch worms and slimy fish, you’ll still have a great time. Grab a six pack or a bottle of wine and head for the water. Beer, sun and QT with your date? Awesome.

Fruit Picking: I love dates where you feel you’ve accomplished something by the end. Feel even more accomplished by baking a pie or making jelly after your fruity date.

Live Theater: Check out the local paper arts section for plays and musicals in your area. Some venues even have a cabaret option with drinks and food served.

Planetarium: Snuggle up under a star show while you learn about the universe. Some towns and schools even offer real star gazing nights. Contact the local university astronomy department for more information.

Open Houses: Dress in your finest “sure I can afford a million dollar home” outfit and pretend you’re in the market for a new house. Daydream about furniture placement and renovations together.

Pub Games: Let the boys show off. Or show them up. Find an ‘upscale’ pool hall and head out for a night of pool and darts.

Science or Children’s Museum: Get hands-on playtime at a science or children’s museum. Go out for ice cream after and really revel in being a kid again.
